CURRICULUM VITAE OF Dr SPIROS COSTOPOULOS
YEAR OF BIRTH : 1948
- Athens College, 1958 -1966
- National Technical University, Athens (NTU): Dipl. Civil Engineering, 1971
- Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale Lausanne (EPFL): Dr Sc Tech (Soil Mechanics), 1981
PROFESSIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND
Dr Costopoulos served as teaching assistant at EPFL of Switzerland, where he mainly taught foundation design, earth pressure theories and soil laboratory. While attending post-graduate courses (3ème cycle) in soil, rock and structural engineering at EPFL, he was engaged in design with B-G and ELECTROWATT, Switzerland (1972-1973).
From 1996 to 2008 he was Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Thessaly, Greece, where he taught Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, while being founder and Director of the Soil Mechanics Laboratory.
In 1976-77 he did his military service while working as associate for the structural design firm of A. Karanikolas and Associates.
From 1977 to 1989 Dr Costopoulos worked as an Independent Consultant initially in the structural design of high rise buildings, industrial installations, silos, pipelines and strengthening of structural frames, and then in soil and rock investigations, design and supervision of over 120 geotechnical projects. His geotechnical work involved site reconnaissance, planning, supervision and interpretation of ground investigations, field and laboratory, as well as design studies of shallow and deep foundations of buildings, industrial plants, storage tanks, silos, bridges, harbor works, excavations and retaining structures, slope stability analysis, stabilization of unstable slopes, pavements, drainage systems, restoration of historic monuments, soil improvement by preloading, gravel columns, geotextiles etc; he was also involved in monitoring of geotechnical structures.
From 1989 to 1993 he was Partner and co-Managing Director in the GEOTECHNICAL DESIGN COMPANY - CIVIL ENGINEERING CONSULTANTS Ltd (G.E.C) where he designed, individually or collectively, over 40 geotechnical structures including earth or rockfill dams, embankments, tunnels, reinforced earth, landslide control, permanent anchors, deep excavations and retaining structures, foundations of buildings, hospitals, sport facilities, factories and special foundations such as a wide-span bridge on piles, a stadium by dynamic compaction etc; he was also involved in the quality control of a pond construction.
In 1993 he founded GEOPLAN Ltd where he served as Partner and Managing Director. Since 1997 he was Consultant of GEOPLAN Ltd where he was involved in the design and supervision of over 200 geotechnical works.
From 2008 he works as a Tunnel and Geotechnical Engineering Expert in Greece and abroad.
Member TEE (1971), ΣΠME (1971), ASCE (1995), ISSMGE, ISRM, ISEG, SSMSTF, ΕΛΟΤ, ΕΕΕΕΘ, ΕΕΣΥΕ
Dr Costopoulos has given numerous lectures in Greece and in other European countries in soil and rock engineering and has also published over 60 technical papers in international and Greek journals and conference proceedings. He is author of four scientific books in geotechnical engineering. He has participated in numerous conferences and symposia, in some of which he was invited lecturer or member of the Organizing Committee. His main research interests lie in the study of the behavior of deep excavations, soft rocks, physical modeling of geotechnical structures and back analysis of monitored geotechnical structures.
Dr Costopoulos is fluent in English and French while he is familiar with Spanish and Italian.
